Also known as “Peruvian Ginseng”, maca is perhaps most famous for its adaptogenic qualities, along with its high phytonutrient content, and contains a rare blend of amino acids, minerals, vitamins and fibre.
The roots get colour-sorted into the typical yellow/mixed, red and black maca root variants.
Yellow maca is the more common type and is especially rich in the active compounds that are unique to maca “macamides” and help to boost energy, balance hormones, promote fertility.
Red maca has been shown to contain higher levels of phytonutrients that are derived by its red skin which can help with prostate health and preventing osteoporosis.
The more rare black maca is rich in the antioxidant compounds known as anthocyanins and can give more protection against free radical damage.
The processing of maca powder is very unique. After harvest, the grade-A maca roots undergo “fresh processing,” immediately drying in large dehydrators. This low-temperature drying ensures the maca roots are never overheated, preserving their beneficial compounds and nutrients. The final product contains higher glucosinolate content, which may have potential cancer-preventive properties.
