The true Acai that all the superfruit studies relate to and that made Acai famous is the fruit of the traditional palm tree Euterpe Oleracea which grows mainly in Brazil. Some Acai farms harvest in the jungle and the native wild. While this sounds romantic, the berry collection is much slower, leaving it exposed to sun and oxidation until the farmers have enough to bring them to the collection centres for the pulping process. So, when pulping, the fruit needs to be pasteurized and requires adding ascorbic acid to revive the colour lost in the process and boost the vitamin C content. Our Brazilian producer harvests them by the morning and immediately ships them to its facilities inside the farms. The berries will be ozone washed to eliminate all pathogens for the pulping process. Then, they are dried gently in their facilities to ensure the highest level of quality.

Freeze drying is a process initially developed for astronaut rations. It means the fruit is quickly frozen, and the water content goes from ice to vapour without passing through the liquid state. It operates at low temperatures preserving the fruit’s characteristic taste, colour and nutritional value.

The acai berry is a fruit that originates from the acai palm (Euterpe oleracea), primarily found in Brazil and northern regions of South America, specifically in swamps and flood plains. Its name, “acai,” is derived from the Portuguese adaptation of the Tupian word “iwaca’i,” which translates to “fruit that cries water.”

Due to their delicate nature, acai berries are not typically exported internationally as fresh fruits. Instead, they are commonly consumed as juices (made from crushed and frozen berries near the source), teas, or powdered supplements. Limited clinical studies have been conducted to validate the actual benefits of acai berries for humans. However, a 2006 independent review by the Natural Standards Research Collaboration indicated that acai had the highest measure of antioxidants among reported foods to date[1]. Additionally, in an experiment, a concentration of acai berry phytonutrients, equivalent to post-consumption levels in the bloodstream, was introduced to a petri dish containing cancer cells from a leukemia patient. The result significantly increased cancer cell mortality, suggesting the need for further research in this area[1].

Another clinical study focused on the effects of acai berries on metabolic parameters. In this study, ten overweight participants consumed two portions of acai pulp daily for 30 days. At the end of the period, they experienced decreased fasting blood sugar, insulin levels, and cholesterol[1].

From a nutritional standpoint, acai berries are rich in protein, antioxidants, fibre, monounsaturated fats, calcium, vitamin A, and anthocyanins—a subgroup of flavonoids found in plant-based foods. Each of these components carries its health benefits. Antioxidants help combat cell damage associated with aging, fibre supports digestive health, and anthocyanins contribute to healthy circulation and nerve function[1][3].

Regarding consumption, acai berry-based juices are delicious, and powdered acai can enhance the flavours of yogurts and smoothies. Considering the available nutritional information and early research on the potential benefits of acai berries, it is reasonable to enjoy these foods as part of a healthy diet[1][3].
