Organic Psyllium Regulations Tightening in India
APEDA, India’s organic authority, had recently required that not only farmer groups but also each individual smallholder farmer register with APEDA. This basically bypassed the previously existing Internal Control Systems of the farmer groups. While this may be a well-intended regulatory initiative, it poses great hardship on the economic realities of the country and of the entire organic psyllium supply.
Recognising this, APEDA extended the deadline for farmer verification under the NPOP (National Programme for Organic Production) system for a second time now, until 3
July 2026. While the organic supply chain is still operating, verification delays of some smallholder farmers and groups are impacting the issuance of Organic Certificates. Practically speaking, organic psyllium seeds and husk from India remain available, but the delay in verification will most certainly result in supply and delivery delays and therefore temporary shortages.
