Market Update - September 2026

Indian Organic Rules Tighten Even Further

Over the last few years, the Indian national organic authority has suspended or sanctioned multiple certification bodies and increased scrutiny across the entire organic supply chain. In its most recent rules update, the Indian organic authority required each organic grower group to be organised as a formally registered legal entity, with all members required to undergo strict registration, as well as geographic GPS location capture.

Such severe regulatory changes have a far-reaching impact and act as a force majeure – with many farmers groups being unable to comply, leading to the suspension of their organic status: not only of their group but also of their goods (even though grown according to organic standards). This is frustrating for farmers, processors, exporters, and is causing a ripple effect throughout the entire subsequent value chain.

Organic Psyllium Update

The organic psyllium harvest in May was largely satisfactory and raw material was available. Yet only halfway through the season, with approx. half of the psyllium farmer groups in organic suspension, very little organic psyllium remains available for purchase. The limited quantities still offered are trading at more than double the prices seen immediately after harvest in May. If you are not fully covered yet, we advise you to cover your most urgent needs now, as pricing will only increase from now until June next year.

Cacao compliant with European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

After two previous postponements, the European Commission has indicated that December 2026 will be the final implementation date for the EUDR. As of today, quite a few producers of South America’s fine cacao have still only taken a few half-hearted steps to implement the challenging, elaborate and costly requirements. Having decades-long close relationships with our South American cacao producers, we have ascertained compliance of our organic cacao with EUDR requirements. We do expect a somewhat rude awakening in Dec/Jan for some producers at origin and with the ensuing scarcity a possible price increase, as this period also falls into the low cacao season. We advise you to seek coverage until mid 2027 for your cacao needs now, to save yourself some headaches.
